China“s NEV retail penetration hits record 62.9% in May

2026.06.22 New-energy vehicles accounted for a record 62.9% of China's retail vehicle sales in May, the Ministry of Commerce said on Monday. The ministry said consumer spending continued to shift toward greener, smarter and healthier products, helped in part by the country's trade-in program. Retail sales of communication equipment rose 13.8% in the first five months of the year. According to ministry data, sales of smart glasses on major e-commerce platforms surged 2.8-fold year-on-year in January-May. Sales of handheld photography devices rose 24.2%, smart glucose meters increased 14.7%, and organic food sales grew 3.6%.
